But what if we didn't have access to all of that? How much more difficult would it be to remember the people and experiences that mean the most to us?

Read MoreI'm not joking when I say that octopus balls are my favorite kind of balls and Otafuku used to serve some of the best at small storefront on East Ninth Street that was so small that only a few people could order and drool in anticipation. It shut down some time ago, but apparently it was just to reopen down the same block as Otafuku x Medetai with an expanded menu and larger space. I had the whole place to myself when I went in today to stuff my face. The moist warm balls were almost as delicious as I remembered with the same sharply salty flavor of its special mayo and ginger. I just didn't get quite as much mayo and ginger as I remember in the best. Next time, I'm going to try the okonomiyaki.
The only thing I know about jazz is that you can't make jazz hands without it, but even my total cluelessness on the subject didn't stop me from enjoying the New York Jazzharmonic's performance at the Washington Square Music Festival last night.
Read MoreDespite having lived in New York for six years (that seems far too long but yikes it's true), I've never seen Macy's fireworks extravaganza. This year my girlfriend and I decided to change that by heading up to the Long Island City river park and join the thousands of others lying in wait. And wow was it worth the effort. To borrow a line from Seinfeld, I can confirm that the Macy's fireworks are real and they're spectacular. It was a legit half hour of the largest explosions I've seen in real life and the sound was so loud that the echoes bouncing off the buildings behind us felt like a tank battalion chasing after Dr. Jones.
I live a few blocks from Katz's and I've eaten there only a handful of times because it really is that good and I don't want to get too fat.
The Achilles International organization is great for all the ways they support disabled athletes, and I love how they have special programs just for war veterans and kids.
Read MoreIt's been too hot and humid for my taste lately, but last night was the best combination of summer warmth and cool river breeze. This spot was somewhere between the first and second pier in the Brooklyn Bridge Park and I highly recommend stopping here to relax and watch the night roll in.
I've shot races for the NYRR for more than five years now but only rarely do I get to sit on the back of the lead truck and take pictures of the fastest runners.
