Now that I'm firmly in my 30s, birthdays aren't quite the same as when I was celebrating in the single digits. Nowadays, a quiet dinner with friends is all I ask for (Ok, that and some laser tag), but I was reminded how much fun birthday parties can be when Time Out New York sent me to Brooklyn to photograph little Zoe's party at The Painted Cloud, which hosted the kind of arts-and-crafts affair that I wish I had had when I was a little guy. The kids had everything they needed to paint masterpieces, construct mind-bending sculptures and I'm pretty sure I saw a miniature Jurassic Park recreated with a pack of tiny plastic dinos. Of course there was also a pinata, confetti, cake and then about 10 minutes immediately following the cake of unfocused, sugar-fueled child glee. Kid birthday parties are possibly my favorite thing to photograph and I can't wait for the next one. Oh, and check out the latest issue of Time Out New York Kids for a couple of my photos!
